Is he Being Clever or Lying?

I accused Twitter user Peter Ingemi of lying today when he posted this tweet:

Now, is he really lying or is he accurately quoting President Obama as he claims?

The first defense of his statement was weaselly. He posted a six second snippet of a long speech the president gave. Six seconds! He does tag his Twitter posts with the #tcot hashtag so using simple arguments is not unexpected. They live in a soundbite world.



This quote by President Obama is a favorite of the #tcot people on Twitter. It's one of their more pathetic lies. The important part of this speech which he gave to UN in 2012 is below. I pulled this from Snopes who pulled it directly from the White House website.

It is time to leave the call of violence and the politics of division behind. On so many issues, we face a choice between the promise of the future, or the prisons of the past. And we cannot afford to get it wrong. We must seize this moment. And America stands ready to work with all who are willing to embrace a better future.

The future must not belong to those who target Coptic Christians in Egypt — it must be claimed by those in Tahrir Square who chanted, "Muslims, Christians, we are one." The future must not belong to those who bully women — it must be shaped by girls who go to school, and those who stand for a world where our daughters can live their dreams just like our sons.

The future must not belong to those corrupt few who steal a country's resources — it must be won by the students and entrepreneurs, the workers and business owners who seek a broader prosperity for all people. Those are the women and men that America stands with; theirs is the vision we will support.

The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. But to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see in the images of Jesus Christ that are desecrated, or churches that are destroyed, or the Holocaust that is denied.

Let us condemn incitement against Sufi Muslims and Shiite pilgrims. It's time to heed the words of Gandhi: "Intolerance is itself a form of violence and an obstacle to the growth of a true democratic spirit." Together, we must work towards a world where we are strengthened by our differences, and not defined by them. That is what America embodies, that's the vision we will support.

How full of hate do you have to be to take a speech that says we must respect the beliefs of all religions and twist it to make it seem like he is defending Islam only? That is what is known as a lie of omission. It is important to take in the full context of this statement. To use six seconds of it to make a point opposite of what the president was saying is a lie.

That takes us back to Peter Ingemi's post. Is it a lie of omission? He is taking the simple #tcot argument and implying that the mainstream media is following Obama's lead and allowing his statement to influence their coverage of the shooting in Garland, TX. So, yes, Peter Ingemi, you are lying. Taking a quote out of context in order to make it look like someone said something they didn't is a lie. You should own your lie and think about what it says about you.

Another Conservative Attacks my Service

This particular rocket scientist named Daniel Deaton came after me recently, accusing me of pretending to have served in the Marine Corps. His reason? I wasn't wearing a National Service Ribbon in 1986. Unlike this fucking idiot I did five minutes of online research so I could see what he was going on about. At first I thought he meant I was supposed to have a ribbon for graduating boot camp because I was unfamiliar with the ribbon. He thinks every serviceman is allowed to wear the ribbon. The only thing is that practice started in 2002 during George Bush's "War on Terror." Before that you could wear the ribbon if you served during Korean War, Vietnam War and the first war in Iraq. None of those conflicts took place in 1986 which is why in the photograph of me taken in 1986 I am not wearing the ribbon. Deaton, who served 29 years in the navy couldn't be bothered to verify his facts before he attacked me. And, once I explained to him how he was wrong he stopped responding. Pretty gutless, no? So, fuck you, Daniel Deaton, do five minutes of research next time before you attack the service of another veteran.

I created this Twitter account to interact with conservatives on Twitter. It has been a fascinating experience. A popular tact by the most colorful of Twitter conservative is to immediately doubt my service. It has happened several times and Deaton is not the first to focus on the lack of the non-merited National Service Ribbon. It really does help with the theory that many of the most conservative people out there are willfully ignorant. So, guess I can thank Deaton for that.
